instalaciones solares fotovoltaicas funcionan de acuerdo con un sencillo principio: constan de paneles solares (m\u00f3dulos fotovoltaicos)\u00a0 individuales, que a su vez contienen c\u00e9lulas solares individuales hechas de materiales semiconductores como el silicio (cristalino y amorfo). En pr\u00e1ctica, durante las horas de luz solar el usuario consume de forma instant\u00e1nea la energ\u00eda solar producida por su propias instalaci\u00f3nes, mientras que cuando no hay luz solar o \u00e9sta no es suficiente, o si el usuario requiere m\u00e1s energ\u00eda el\u00e9ctrica de la que la planta solar est\u00e1 en grado de proveer, ser\u00e1 la red el\u00e9ctrica\u00a0 la que garantizar\u00e1 el abastecimiento de la energ\u00eda el\u00e9ctrica necesaria.<br \/><br \/>Por otro lado, si ocurre que la instalaci\u00f3n solar produce m\u00e1s energ\u00eda que aquella requerida por el usuario, esa energ\u00eda solar no utilizada puede ser cedida a la red.
